how to choose perfume for your lady

So i was out with some friends last week and a girlfriend was gushing sweetly about how her bf bought her a particular perfume and how much she loves it. Immediately i was intrigued to know how he managed to find her such a pleasurable scent to her senses.

You see, like shoes, make up, hairstyles and clothes, some things compliment us, and others just don't. So what i was really wondering what how this one "Romeo" managed to buy his lady a scent that actually suited her.

As such, as i so often do, i started a new conversation topic with different men, over a few days (just so it wasn't always the alcohol that was doing the talking):

Eh, what do men actually think about ah? When they are buying perfume for their girlfriend?
My, my, my.... after listening to the answers, i have never been more proud of men. Honestly, just when you think they are so replaceable, they say some stuff to really surprise you.

1. When you buy perfume for her, you have to match it to her personality.

2. You need to buy the scent that reminds you of her the most.

3. When you smell the scent, you must immediately think of her

4. You need to think about when she will wear this perfume. If you buy for her to wear on dates with you, must be sexy. If its for her to just go out and stuff, then no need to be so hot. (this one in particular made me smile)

Perfume has always been such a personal item to me. I cannot imagine someone buying me a scent that i will fall in love with. And yet, milllions of men wonder around the perfume floor every valentine/birthday/anniversary/sorry i'm working so late/ etc etc. hoping to find that one scent that will make his girl's knees weak.

i must be very very wrong. This is how i mostly saw men:

No wonder i'm single again. ;)

So this article is for the wonderful sweet perfume buying men. How to choose that special scent for that extra special girl.

Choosing Women's Perfume

    • Consider the woman for whom you are choosing perfume. If you have a close relationship with her, you might know what her go-to perfume is. If so, the salesperson should be able to direct you to a scent in the same family---whether oriental, woody, earthy, floral, citrus or unisex. Describe the recipient's personality to the salesperson: Is she athletic? Feminine? Sophisticated? Outgoing? Many perfumes are associated with a certain personality; for instance, Jil Sander Sport Perfume and Metal Jeans by Versace are geared toward athletic, ambitious women.

    • Age is another important consideration when choosing perfume for a woman. Many perfumes are classified according to the age range for which they are most appropriate. Teenagers might be interested in Harajuku Lovers G, Marc Jacobs Daisy or Vera Wang Princess. Kenzo Flower, Christian Dior Miss Dior and Yves Saint Laurent Baby Doll are a few choices for women in their twenties. Choices for more mature women include Yves Saint Laurent Paris, Dolce & Gabbana The One and Romance by Ralph Lauren.

    • Sneak a peek at her wardrobe. A woman's choice in fragrance often corresponds to her clothing. Is her closet full of designer labels such as Chanel and Gucci, or does she prefer clothing from retailers like the Gap and Banana Republic? Many labels offer perfumes designed to reflect the type of woman who outfits herself in the clothes. Does she prefer to keep her wardrobe muted, wearing black and white, or does she go for bold colors and patterns? Women who wear a clean color palette might prefer a similarly clean scent, perhaps a floral like Vera Wang Signature. Women who enjoy standing out in the crowd might like a strong oriental perfume such as Narciso Rodriguez for Her. If her style is a little more difficult to categorize, consider choosing a less mainstream perfume that few people wear. Choices include Annick Goutal, Bond No. 9 New York or By Killian.

    • When in doubt, the best thing to do is choose a classic perfume. These are scents that have stood the test of time, that smell good on everyone and that are suitable for all ages. Some scents to consider include Chanel Coco Mademoiselle, Chanel No. 5, Donna Karan Cashmere Mist, Estee Lauder Beautiful and Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio.

I hope this one helps the men out there. :)
